for Neuroinformatics & Mental Health

Spanning affective neurodevelopmental to neurodegenerative disorders, mental health disorders are the world’s largest under-treated epidemic, impacting one in three people worldwide. Current diagnostic methods take a symptom-based approach once they start to show in the individual, leaving little to no room for disease prevention. There is also symptomatic overlap between mental disorders, leading to a delay in proper diagnosis, as well as a trial-and-error approach towards treatment. This is a far greater challenge than any one discipline can handle. In order to unlock the mysteries of the brain, we need a transdisciplinary and collaborative approach to help integrate what we know about the brain in a more holistic way.

The latest research technologies, partnership tools and big data launch us into a new phase of brain research. The brain itself is a network, and is influenced by all its connections and mechanisms. In order to understand underlying brain pathologies, we need to think and work like the brain, and to study the brain as a network, with strong partnerships, interdisciplinary perspectives and interconnected academic faculties. This is the premise and the promise of the Ludmer Centre.

With big-data and Open Science at its core, the Ludmer Centre serves as a research hub between different McGill-affiliated laboratories, as well as their international network of collaborators, to bring together multidisciplinary experts and accelerate discoveries.

Our people

The centre thrives due to the research and collaborations of its diverse and multidisciplinary researchers. In addition to four scientific directors, the Ludmer Centre is made up of a network of principal investigators.

Our research

Abstract brain created with lines and dots

The Ludmer Centre focuses on five core research themes, and the intersection between them. This approach allows the centre to combine expertise and resources, and ultimately advance brain and mental health research.

Land Acknowledgement

The Ludmer Centre and its partner institutions are on land which has long served as a site of meeting and exchange amongst Indigenous peoples, including the Haudenosaunee and Anishinabeg nations.

We acknowledge and thank the diverse Indigenous peoples whose footsteps have marked this territory on which peoples of the world now gather.
